The Evolution Of Keratin Treatments

Most things in the beauty industry morph over time – styles, trends, techniques, you name it. And keratin treatments are no different. They first hit the beauty scene in the early 2000s from work done at a laboratory in Brazil – hence the reference to Brazilian blowouts. But they’ve come a long way, baby, since then, and you now have a range of keratin treatment options from which to choose.
Keratin is a protein found naturally in your hair. When your hair becomes dry and damaged from chemical processing or overuse of heat styling techniques, a great way to fix it is to replace some of the damaged keratin from the outside in. For people with otherwise healthy hair that is naturally curly, heat and humidity in the environment can make their hair difficult to control, and keratin treatments can be an excellent option for them, too.
Express keratin treatments are short-term solutions for anyone wanting more manageable hair. They’re quick and last for up to six weeks. Your stylist will apply the keratin treatment in serum form and seal it in with a blow dryer and flat iron combination. It will only take about 45 minutes from start to finish. So it’s an easy add-on for your regular styling appointment. After treatment, you can expect to be able to dry your hair in about half the time it took you before, and your hair will be soft and won’t frizz even in high humidity.
Full strength keratin treatments require a bit more time in the chair, but they’ll work wonders on damaged hair. The product needs to sit in your hair for some time before being sealed in with a blow dryer and flat iron. The results are similar to the express treatments though, and you can expect your hair to stay soft and manageable for anywhere from three to six months.
