The Basics: A Skincare Routine for Great Looking Makeup

Looking great makes us feel great, and flawless makeup gives us the confidence to stride through our day. Great makeup starts with the best foundation: healthy skin. To get there, it’s important to take care of your skin with a daily routine that cleans, moisturizes, and nourishes your skin. building the best skincare routine can be easy if you understand the basics.
The basic routine looks like this:
- Morning – cleansing, toning, moisturizing
- Night – cleansing, toning, adding nourishing serums, moisturizing
The rest of your routine varies based on your skin type and individual needs, and each product should be formulated for your skin type: oily, dry, normal, combination, or sensitive.
Oily skin needs gentle, oil-free cleansers and moisturizers that care for skin without over-stripping, which can make cause your skin to produce even more oil. Toner is an important step, because it balances the pH of your skin to help normalize your skin’s condition.
Dry skin needs moisture, so even your cleanser needs to be moisturizing. Lotion and cream cleansers can be ideal. You can also choose a moisturizing toner to give you an extra hydrating boost.
For combination skin, use the product that corresponds with the type that’s most prevalent. For example, if you have more oily skin areas than dry, use oily skin products, but add some extra moisturizing to those few dry patches. For sensitive skin, use your skin type as a guide but also seek out products without added fragrances and harsh ingredients. For normal skin, use products formulated for normal to dry skin.
Serums infuse antioxidants and other nutrients as well as condition-specific formulas like alpha hydroxy acids for anti-aging. Ask your skincare specialist to recommend products that will be effective for your skin’s individual needs.
Sunscreen is a must for everybody, even on cloudy days. The best way to get it is with a moisturizer that also contains sunscreen, or, if you use foundation, choose one that also has UV protection.
Building an effective skincare routine is easy when you start with the basics. Understand your skin type first so you can choose products that work for you, then build around the basic steps of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.
