Hair Care Tips for Dry Hair

Millions of people have dry hair, especially those who have long, curly locks. Dry hair is susceptible to damage, including split ends, breakage, and frizz, and requires special care, including regular deep conditioning. If you have dry hair, you’ve probably tried every product in the store, and few come close to giving you the soft, silky hair you’re looking for. The right product can be a powerful tool, but a change in some habits can also help. Today, we’ll talk about some of the top tips for caring for your dry hair.
Infrequent shampooing. Shampoo is great for cleansing, but it can be a bit too good, stripping away everything, including those natural oils that help moisturize your hair. Most people shampoo too often, and this is more of a problem for those with dry hair. Cut back on the cleansing and shampoo only two or three times per week. If you seem to just need something in between shampoos, use a dry shampoo made with natural ingredients.
Use less product. Many premium salon products are concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Read the label and don’t use more product than the manufacturer recommends. Using too much shampoo has the same effect as shampooing too often: drying out your hair.
Wash your scalp, not your hair. When shampooing, clean your scalp, not the ends of your hair. That’s where most of the dirt and pollutants will be concentrated, and the rest of your hair will get clean when rinsing. The hair closest to your scalp is the youngest, and it needs the most attention.
Get serious about conditioning. Even on days where you don’t shampoo, dry hair still needs conditioner. Invest in a powerful conditioner recommended by your stylist – the cheap brands are often watered down and missing key ingredients. Squeeze excess water out of your hair before applying so it can really soak in and leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing. Most dry hair needs regular deep conditioning, so make an appointment with your stylist for weekly treatments for best results.
Avoid heat. Speaking of rinsing, doing so with hot water can dry your hair even more, so turn down the heat when you rinse. Heat can dry out and damage hair, so if your style requires blow drying and lots of heated styling tools, ask your stylist about options for air-drying hairstyles or options that cut back on the heat. If you just can’t give up that style, apply a heat protectant before styling.
Stick to a healthy diet. What goes into your body is just as important as your haircare routine. Drink plenty of water all day long to stay hydrated, and eat a balanced, healthy diet with lots of foods rich in omega-3, vitamin B-3, and vitamin B-5 to promote moisturizing and healthy hair growth.
